Here's the answer to the question. Glad we could help!

 Question Number: 190Type: Problem Sites/General
Q
Help! The black walnut trees in my yard and the neighbors yard have killed off most of our west-facing perennials and shrubs. Where can I find information on what will grow near walnut trees. One of the trees is centered in our front yard so removing it is not an option. Believe me, I've considered this!
A
Head to this excellent Black Walnut Toxicity website from Ohio State University. It's has most complete list of walnut-resistant plants that I know of.
I often wonder if plants dying under walnuts could be an issue of extremely dry shade because of the tree roots, rather than a toxicity problem. In some cases it could be a combination of the two. Bear this in mind... if things are looking wilted in July and August (especially newly planted perennials) they may be desperate for some water.
