About the photo:
A winner in our July 2006 Perennial Plant Pests Photo Contest, sent in by Lida of Croghan, New York.

This is a JAPANESE BEETLE feeding on her English rose, a beautiful selection named 'Charlotte'.

While roses are technically shrubs, not perennials, Japanese beetles feed on a very wide range of plants, including many perennials like hollyhocks, Hibiscus, summer phlox and others.
